Not many know fashion like Studio Savvy’s owner, Deena Von Yokes. At the early age of 17, while most other teenagers were preoccupied with the drama of the school day, Deena was hard at work cutting, styling and coloring hair. Her mother’s salon was the perfect playground for her talents and she quickly fell in love with the fashion world.
Fast forward 34 years and Deena is still rocking the local glamour scene. Her salon, Studio Savvy, a cornerstone in Rancho Santa Fe, is best known for their crew of color specialists. Having been dubbed a “salon for the perfect blonde”, Deena contests the title. “Our glam squad doesn’t try to specialize in blondes. It’s just a niche that we happen to be very good at. Personally, I just love working creatively with color. It’s important not to be limited in such a creative arena. I think hair is a beautiful art form and I consider myself, above all else, to be an artist.”
With her expertise in all things fashion and beauty, it made perfect sense when Craig Dado of the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club approached her with the opportunity to direct the famous Opening Day Hats Contest at the Del Mar Races.
Her experience in the community with events for the Rady Children’s Hospital, National Charity League, Art of Fashion, San Diego’s 10 Best Dressed and her collaboration in the industry to fashion leaders like Zandra Rhodes lend credibility to her new position and make her the perfect spokesperson for the event. “This event is a blast.” Deena commented. “Fun for the judges, fun for the contestants and fun for the spectators. It’s a great way to honor the tradition of the racetrack’s early days with new creative flair.”

Meet Founder, Deena Von Yokes
I was lucky enough to know my calling at a young age. While kids my age were going through the motions of their summer jobs, I was in my mother’s salon, excited and engaged in the art of beauty and style. I wasted no time in learning the ins and outs of running a business, knowing that my life’s path was already well underway.
From the beginning, I laid the foundation of Studio Savvy with dogged work ethic, top-notch training, and focusing on skill and technique. I get such a sense of pride and joy when I see the Studio Savvy Glam Squad provide service with such precision and professionalism., but that is not the only thing that makes Studio Savvy unique.
With a constant compulsion (call it an obsession) to make things more beautiful, I could not wait to reach the point where I could release my creativity and see the beauty that transpired. Hair is an art form, ready for a creative hand to make something amazing. I approach it as an artist would, ready to create something fresh and striking.
But I don’t want to keep it to myself! There is so much young talent in this industry, nouveau artists themselves, which are going to transform the way we approach hair and fashion. Elevating this new era of fashionistas is thrilling for me, both as a mentor and as an artist.
Over the years, the scope of my creations keeps expanding. I now find myself called upon to create so much more than just hair. From fashion shows to film production, I could not have imagined that my path would lead me where it has but I believe it is that same obsession that keeps me on my feet when many others would call it a day. There is nothing more gratifying than making people happy and beautiful!
